Play With the Changes

When I was working on Crossing Over, Leonardo Nam would always say, "You don't know where life is gonna take you, but you gotta be ready."  That's so true for me.

My last post, was a long time ago -- almost three months.  A lot has happened since then, and it's funny because a lot was happening then, too.  July was a super busy time for auditions for me, even though I was told that it's usually slow.  I was going on TV and film auditions almost every day, including an audition for the Tekken movie (which everyone and their mom went on).  I shot a co-star role on the ABC mid-season show October Road, shot a two-part episode for the Nickelodeon show Just Jordan, where I played Justin Chon's quirky cousin.  (I had played opposite Justin Chon in Crossing Over!) And after years of auditioning, I finally get selected to do the 2007 ABC Diversity Showcase.

My biggest development is that I booked the lead role in a film and will be leaving to go shoot in Hong Kong in less than a week.  It's called Seventh Moon -- It will be produced by Haxan Films, the makers of The Blair Witch Project, and I will be playing a newlywed, opposite Amy Smart, who get lost in the Chinese countryside in the seventh lunar month; the most superstitious month of the year.  It will be my biggest role and biggest challenge as of yet.  This is what they call, stepping up to the next level.

So I will be gone in HK for 10 weeks, working.  I've never been before, and now I get paid to go, and will have my own first class apartment and per diem.  So because of this, I will be quitting my job, moving out of my apartment, and leaving the country. I figured it was a good time to move out of my apartment, since I've been wanting to.  And so I've moved back home and commute to LA everyday.  Gawd, moving was a huge pain in the ass, because I had so much stuff this time around and too many things to think about.  So much, that I had to quit my job at Abercrombie, and not even finish out my two weeks.  Thankfully, they were really cool about it.

This month, I've been running around like a fiend, trying to set my personal affairs in order, moving out, prepping for HK, working out twice a day with a personal trainer (I have to be in "naked shape"), and trying to do my homework for the character and script.  After all, when you're the lead, you can't show up to set and not have done your work.  Maybe some of you guys have witnessed it, but I've been SUUUUPER stressed out.  When you're waking up at 6am, moving non-stop (except for the 3 hours you're in traffic) and still not getting everything done in the day, you tend to worry.

Anyway, this is the last week I'll be in LA for a while.  It's my crunch time.  So I'd thought I'd take a quick sec to write down what's been going on with me.  After busting my ass all year, it's going to end in such a grand way: taking it to that next level, and i'm excited and freaked out at the same time.  But like Leo said, you don't know where life is gonna take you, but you gotta be ready.

I'll be leaving for HK this Friday, the 28th.  I probably won't get to see most of my friends before I leave, because I have a feeling that I'll be prepping up until the very last minute.  If I don't get to see you, I'm sorry. But I should be back by December (in time for the Crossing Over premiere?), unless I decide to take-over the apartment from the producers and stay in HK.

If you want to keep in touch, I'll be on AIM and Skype, and even iChat, whenever I'm free.  And I'll be doing my best to blog from HK.  In any case, wish me luck...  and I'll see you all on the flip-side!

Hollywood Hustle

...and the madness continues
(warning: picture heavy)

Friday

Today was a big day for me.  It was like prom... except it was the World Premier of Wizard of Gore at the LA Film Fest, and corresponding premiere party at The W Hotel.  Baby's first red carpet ceremony.  On top of that I have a big audition for some people that I really need to impress.  I decide to skip going into work Friday altogether and spend the time doing things that I had been putting off for far too long.  Like cleaning my place.  And dishes.  And laundry...   far too long.

Come morning, I tried to sleep in as much as possible (which ended up being 9:35am) and then got up, and lazily read Los Angeles magazine while I showered and cleaned up, and shaved in a way so that I still had a subtle stubble.  Earrings were still in.

I debated hitting the gym, but instead I took Cally to the car wash, while I planned out my day.  Then by 11:30am, I get a call from my agent telling me that I have an audition for a "confidential computer company"... in an hour.  Of course this frustrates me, because I was planning on going to H&M to go buy a suit for the audition, since I would be wearing my only one later that evening for the premiere.  Guess not.  So after a bit of debating, I decide to go for it.  I change back out of my "upscale 30 something year-old" outfit, and into my "young 20's alterna-hip" outfit.  Sometimes it's cool that I have a versatile look, but today it was just stressing me out.

Anyway, I hop on over, spend 35 minutes waiting around, and they take 3 snapshots of me, and that's it.  So I head back home to change, and I can already start to see Friday traffic starting to form.  I quickly shed my 20's look and once again don my suit, change up my hair, and hit the road for North Hollywood for my second audition.  Ugh.  405 and 101 Freeways.  Not fun.

It takes me about 45-50 minutes to get there, as I try not to stress out, A/C on full-blast. The audition was for a live hosting of a Mercedes Benz tour across 10 different cities throughout the US.  It pays $15,000 for 10 weekends and a $50 a day per diem, to be the guy that spouts the new features of the 2008 C-Class in front of real people.  Mentally, I think they wanted a Ryan Seacrest who was knowledgable, more about Benz's than celebs.  He also has to spout off a pre-written copy of facts without sounding like a robot or moron.  Anyway, I go in and there are a number of guys in various states of suits and various states of "clean-cut".  I think with any other casting director my earrings would've been a liability, but these casting directors happened to be friends of mine, whom I've worked for in the past, so it's all good.  I wait for half an hour or so, go in, and do my thing, and take-off.

Amazingly, it takes me the same amount of time for me to get home, despite the fact that Friday traffic was really starting to show.  As soon as I get home, I change into a wife-beater and shorts, and get to cleaning.  Everyone is meeting at my place at 7pm to head over to the premier party, including my kind-of-sort-of date, Kelly.  This is Kelly:

Yeah.  I didn't want to make a bad impression on Kelly, and it took me the special bait of "Hey do you want to go with me to my movie premiere?" to finally get her to go out with me.  Unfortunately, my place was a huge mess.  Imagine if the dump of Sarath's room had sort of spread itself out to the rest of the apartment.  Except that it was mostly my mess, and not his.

Thankfully, I'm able to clean, reorganize (and hide), vacuum, and freshen most of the kitchen, living room and bathroom before anyone arrives, with enough time to take a quick shower.  As Esther and Bridgette arrive, I change, once again, back into my good ol' suit.  Once Kelly shows up, we all pile up into Cally and take off.  Good thing she was clean and freshly waxed!  Er, Cally, I mean, not Kelly.  (Although...)

We arrive at The W and valet.  We show up and immediately there's problems with our RSVP.  Thankfully, Glen, the producer shows up right behind us and tells them "This guy is in the film.  Anyone he wants let in, gets in."  And we walk in.  (My first taste of being a star.)  The venue is actually "The Backyard" - the outdoor pool and cabana area with multiple bars and tables, in the heart of the high-rises of Westwood.  Quite the swank location.  Unfortunately, I don't recognize anyone.  So the four of us kinda chill out and drink our drinks.  Well, I drink my Red Bull.  I'm not drinking because I don't want my publicity photos taken while I'm chinky-eyed and red.

As the night goes on, the evening gets progressively weirder.  We meet some really strange folk, including  James, who was wearing a baseball cap, sunglass (at night), and shorts, who had no idea what the event was, and his "client" Jo-Jo (or was it Joe-Joe?), a supposed heavy hitter.  And so here I am, in this total Hollywood moment: We're standing next to a pool, trying to figure out who is who, right as this total stranger, James, is proclaiming to me that he knows everyone in Hollywood; all the while a mustachioed magician and a tiny man in a ratty old bunny suit are setting up their "stage".  James confides in me how he wants to call up Judd Apatow's wife, Leslie Mann, to try and seduce her into getting Judd (he's so hot right now) to put him in one of his upcoming movies, when Glen, the producer, walks by, they recognize each other, and they shout with jubilant reunion.  They go way back.  Like grade school back.

It's a crazy night, filled with a decent amount of random people, and even more random happenings.  After finding my sister and her friends at the hotel lobby bar, we finally taxi it over to the Westwood Majestic Crest Theater and I get to do my publicity photo walk.  Yay!  I'm exercising significant restraint as a cadre of photographers call my name and beckon me to look at their camera.  It's mildly exhilarating, except I have no idea what to say when they interview me.

One thing is for sure, though:  people certainly gave me a generous amount of respect - which I'm pretty sure I owe to fact that I was in the company of three hot women.  After some abuse of power on my being a star, I get my sister's friend (who was not able to by a ticket) into the show, and we're all inside; me and 6 women.  By the time the movie actually starts, the alcohol has really kicked in, and the girls are either laughing quite freely, or passed out.

I'll try not to spoil the movie.  I'll say this: the film is intense and tough to watch at times, and occasionally, challenging to follow, even for someone like me who knew the script.  There are some very crazy moments, some absolutely brilliant camera work, and quite a few splatters of blood and guts, and a healthy handful of exposed breasts.  (no pun intended)  With the name being what it is, you're either seeing the movie for those reasons, or you're fooling yourself.

All in all, by the end of the night, we were all quite exhausted.  It was a long film, and it was a particularly long day for me.  Glen was kind enough to fit the four of us into the back seat of his brand new 7 series, while Glen's driver and Cinematographer took the front, to take us back to our car.  It's 2:30am and time to head home, because yet again...  I had another long day ahead of me.

*Thanks to e*star for being the night's photog

Saturday

So Neil and Dave J. Lee decide to enter this contest called the 72 Hour Shootout.  It's a film contest, where teams of contestants are given a theme on Friday, and then charged with writing the script, shooting the project, and editing it to a final project, all within 72 hours.  I was tapped to be one of Neil and Dave's primary corp of actors.

Throughout the madness of Friday night's premiere, Neil and I stay in contact as he keeps me up to date on the theme, our progress, and I offer any suggestions I might have.  This, as well as my anticipation for the days shooting, also added to my preoccupation and stress for the day before.  Dave goes hardcore and cranks out an amazing script that's finished at 5am.

Here is the theme: "Elizabeth Ong is missing."  The rules are: Elizabeth Ong does not appear in the film.  The fact that Elizabeth Ong is missing should be central to the story.  All the characters in the film have a connection with Elizabeth Ong.

I won't say what we did just yet, but I will say that I ended up being the main character, and I got to stick my tired-ass face into the camera quite a bit.  To top it off, my character wore a suit.  Which means that I had to wear my suit for three days in a row.   Awesome.  However, earrings finally came out.

It was hot, and I ended up sweating a lot.  By this point, I could see the bags building up in my eyes, and every now and then I would zone out.  Our concept was somewhat physical as well, so I was moving around a lot.  Nevertheless, the day actually went really well, and despite some delays with lighting issues, we were able to get all of our shots and finish early.  And as tired and sweaty as I may have been, shooting these quick and dirty videos with your good friends is just great fun.  We all had a good time, and we were glad that we were able to rise up to the task and put out a good product.  In fact, even though the project was part of a contest, we were doing it more to challenge ourselves, rather than concerning ourselves with the win.  For us, creativity was its own reward.  I mean, what else can you expect from a team that goes by the name of "Team HeadOn: Apply Directly to the Forehead."*

Team HeadOn: Apply Directly to the Forehead.
Team HeadOn: Apply Directly to the Forehead.
Team HeadOn: Apply Directly to the Forehead.
Team HeadOn: Apply Directly to the Forehead.

We wrap our 11 hour day by grabbing some celebratory burritos and cervesas at Poquito Mas.  With my part done, (I leave the most difficult parts, aka the writing and editing, to Dave and Neil) I head home.  Finally, a chance to sleep early.

Sunday

I really tried to sleep in this day, but even still, that came out to be around 10am.  At least I woke up feeling a lot more rested than I had been every day previously.  I was looking forward to staying in and takin' it easy.  Maybe even doing lotsa office stuff, going over some bills, etc.  But I realized that I really should go into work at A&F to make-up the hours that I would be missing this upcoming week.  And I will be missing a whole lot of them.  So into work I went.

Thankfully for me, and I guess, unfortunately for them, there wasn't a whole lot of work for me to do.  The Central HR server was running extreeeeeemely slow, and processing HR stuff was taking forever.  So really all I was doing was sitting around and waiting.  I could've made some calls, but I really try to avoid making business calls on a Sunday.  So I went into to work and got paid to sit around.  Damn, if I had a real job, I suppose I could've xanga'd like some of you other folks.  I have enough time to grab lunch at Souplantation on the clock (oops!)  And yet somehow, I only end up clocking in 5.75 hours for the day.  Not a significant dent in my hours deficit.

I head home to change, and Hannah Montana meets me there.  Tonight, baby, is the wrap party for Crossing Over.  I get to hang out with good folk, chow down on some hors d'ouvers, and best of all, open bar.  Time to get crunk.  It was great to see everyone again.  I had such a great time with the cast and crew, that hanging out with them was like a total reunion.  Of course, I still had to do a bit of schmoozing and networking.  After all, Gotta keep hustling.  But overall, it was good times...  good times.  I'll leave you with some pics.

Tuesday

After a half day at work and a trip to the dentist office on Monday, I'm back in business with a shoot.  Turns out, I booked that gig for the "confidential computer company".  Hmm... you'll probably only need one guess as to which computer company it is, and yet ironically, you wouldn't even be able to tell from the shoot, because there were no products on site.

IMG_1600.JPG IMG_1622.JPG

It was probably the easiest day of work ever.  Chillin' in a backyard BBQ with a diverse group of people.  Seriously they just shot us having fun and hanging out!  I got to hang out in the pool all day with cute girls, and cool guys.  Even the older folks were totally cool, and the young kids were a blast.  Actually, some of the older "moms" were pretty hot.  One looked like Ashley Judd, and the other looked like 'Penelope Cruz's sister'.  I only wish I got to eat the food they grilled.

IMG_1602.JPG IMG_1619.JPG

IMG_1601.JPG IMG_1615.JPG

All in all, a relaxing day of work, which was a welcome change of pace.  I didn't get paid much, and I probably won't appear in the final campaign or any of the commercials, but it's all good.  I have other things going on and other things coming up ahead.

So for now, I'm gonna kick back, enjoy the rest of my evening and go to bed early, and regain my strength for the end of the week.

No Sleep Til...

I'm so very tired that I shouldn't be blogging right now, but I thought I'd take a moment to let everyone know what the hell is going on with me.  I also wanted to take the time to document everything that is happening to me right now, because I know that in a few hours things are going to blur...

Friday

So first of all, there were a couple of things that happened last weekend, that I didn't get to cover in pictures.  Last Friday night was Dave J. Lee's birthday.  He's 30-something now.  We seriously lost track after 30.  But anyway, he wanted to do something classic and silly, so we all spent an hour and a half at the Culver City Ice Rink and went broomballing

Now, I don't know about you, but broomballing is a blast to play...   when you're a teenager.  Don't get me wrong, it's still fun to play, but when we're pushing 30, our bodies can't quite hang as well.  It took me most of the week to recover.  If you don't know what broomball is, it's basically hockey - but without the skates, the pads, and the strategy.  Instead of hockey sticks you have a broom (like the kind Harry Potter rides, except functional) that's taped up with duck tape, and instead of a puck, you have a ball.  Here's me with a broken broom, and my genius invention of a coat hanger attached to my broom.

Afterwards, we ended the night at the local dive Lost & Found and I sipped a diet coke while chatting with old friends until they closed the bar.  I go home and rest up since the next day I would be going into to work, and then attending a prom.

Sunday

This past Sunday I attended a screening of one of my coworkers films at the Playhouse West Film Festival in North Hollywood.  For those that don't know, Playhouse West is home to a Meisner school of acting, and therefore the screening was FULL of very attentive, supportive and intelligent acting students - many of whom are working professionals.  (I saw quite a few faces that I had seen on TV).  Therefor the audience wasn't your typical "support" crowd of the usual film fest circle jerk.  Fortunately, the two shorts screened were VERY good.  There was some good acting and some amazing writing.

My friend's short was impressive considering how ambitious it was.  The script was very tight and the story was delivered at an impeccable pace, even though it spanned 15 years and had a twist ending.  It ended up winning 4 awards, including Grand Jury prize.  Casual viewers may not think it's anything special, but anyone who has ever tried to make a film of any kind will know that this short was just ridiculously. well. done.  It's called "Dartsville".  Check it out if you ever get a chance.

Monday

After an attempt at a relaxing day, it was back to work, and without the senior managers around (away on conference), the other managers wouldn't have time to be able to follow up with my work.  Which meant I needed to make sure I got my $hit done.   And considering I had been short on my weekly hours average, I needed to clock in some extra hours.  And that's tough to do when my back is all knotted up and my body is all sore from eating it on the ice in broomball.

So of course, I start the week off right by skipping out of work for two hours to go to an audition for Slim Jim.  For homework, the casting company gave us a link to check out the previous Slim Jim commercials to get a feel for what we'd be doing, and whaddya know...  I see David Douglas - the other main guy in the Busch Gardens commercial I did the previous Thursday.  We were cool with each other the entire shoot, and we had even joked around in our callbacks together.  So anyway, I bomb the audition, but I don't really care, and I remind myself that I need to give David a call.

Back at work, and group interviews go well.  I end up leaving early (great way to 'make-up hours') to catch Ziggy, aka Long Nguyen perform his music at "The Talking Stick", a local coffee shop in Santa Monica.  Cool spot, decent sound setup, less-than-stellar ice-blended chai drinks.  The show is from 7pm to 8, and Zig plays a pretty solid set with a 70% full house.  It's been a while since I've heard his songs, solo and acoustic, but this time Zig played with some live samples of himself to create a full sound.  Pretty neat.  You can check out his music here, or come to his show at The Gig on Melrose to see him with his band, Aug. 28.

The next couple of days, sleep is terrible, and my back continues to turn itself into knots.  Meanwhile, my demeanor at work suffers, as does my diet.  (I always crave junk food when I don't sleep well)  By the end of the day, I'm using curse words in every other sentence at work, and I can barely stand to stick around for more than 7 hours.  I need to see a chiropractor to straighten out my back, but that doesn't happen.

I also need to kill those fucking pigeons that live on my balcony.

By Wednesday, I am one cranky dude.  I'm also a bit anxious about my upcoming Wizard of Gore premiere, for the LA Film Fest on Friday.  It's my first red carpet ceremony, and I don't exactly know what the hell you're supposed to do, except for one thing: walk around like you know everything.

I'm tired.  I look like crap.  My eyes have those puffy eye bags, and I haven't been to the gym in almost 3 weeks.  Then, to top it off, I get a call from my agent.  Make that three calls from my agent.  They've got some things for me to do that add to my hectic schedule...

Thursday

So it turns out I have two auditions on Thursday, which is always good news for when I need to be at work for a lot of hours.  Oh wait... no it's not.  In the morning, I have an audition for NFLShop.com to be a sideline photographer.  What the heck does a sideline photographer wear?

At this point, I still have my earrings from Crossing Over in, and I have been resisting the pressure to remove them - even though I am violating the A&F look policy by keeping them in.  Since I had to remove them for that second Grey's episode a couple months ago, I had them repierced for when I picked up shooting for Crossing Over again.  Now, I've grown kind of attached to them, and if I take them out, my piercings will close up.  I decide to leave them in until the Wizard of Gore premiere.

After my audition, I'm back at work, and I've pretty much mentally checked out.  I'm around for maybe and hour or two, make a couple phone calls, prepare a report, and then leave for my second audition.  This time it's for Toyota, and I gotta dress and appear like "Andy Lau".  Crap.  Since I don't want to wear slacks and a button up, I throw my suit coat over an A&F blue button up and some very tight fitting, dark-wash A&F jeans, so that I can half dress for the audition and half be dressed for work.  The audition goes okay, even though right off the bat they give me hard time about my earrings.  Some of the other Asian girls that were there for the audition...  not hot.  Thankfully, the one who was in mine?  hot.  In fact, I just now realized that I had jocked her two years ago after seeing her in a Here and Now show.  Her name is Yuu.

Back to work, and I don't bother to change.  I make a couple more phone calls, and I get ready to head out as soon as possible because I want to get in line for this:

Free party from 7pm - 3am at the LACMA.  Word on the street was that the line was going to be insane, and so I wanted to get there early to make sure we got in.  And thank god I did, because the line was IN-SANE.  I had a friend that got there maybe 15 min after I did (but forgot to RSVP) and waited in line for over 3 hours.  Even at 12am the RSVP line went around the La Brea Tar Pits!

And I can understand why...  This was arguably one of the best parties I've ever been to.  Great venue.  Great music.  Great crowd.  The best part was that it was such a diverse scene, and people were out just to have a good time.  We were hanging out with kids, old folks, people of all races and colors, just out in appreciation of art and culture.

Highlights included:
IMG_4894
Seeing personal favorite The Rebirth play live

IMG_4899
Watching my friends get custom silkscreened t-shirts with really bad ass designs at the Hit-and Run booth.

IMG_4879 IMG_4912
Participating in the live-art group mural.

IMG_4884 IMG_4882
Watching the circus performers spontaneously join in on a mass scale choreographed dance in the middle of the "Ultra-Lounge" completely unannounced.  Blew my freakin' mind.

Watching the 70-year old man in a white tuxedo and top hat bust a move to progressive house music and show up all the 20 year old hotties that he still had it while the crowd cheered him on.

Meeting Kevin Pereira and joking around with him!

Seeing the art exhibits for freeeeee.

Seriously, it's amazing how random and unexpected the night was, and how much it just added to the overall ambiance of spontaneity.  By 12:30 we were all tired but yet we still wanted to hang out and see what the night held in store.  But alas, I needed to get home and rest up because I had another big day ahead of me.
